Spotswood Yards

Spotswood Yards is a major urban regeneration project transforming a significant former industrial site in Melbourne’s Inner West into a connected, landscape-led residential precinct.

Ground Landscape Studio’s landscape approach plays an important role in establishing a new identity for the precinct, creating a network of green spaces and communal areas that connect residents with each other and with the wider neighbourhood.

At the heart of the development, central gardens provide a green focus for the community. Designed as places to gather, relax and move through, these shared landscapes introduce softness, shade and seasonal change within the higher-density urban environment. Planting and landscape elements help define spaces at a human scale while creating a strong sense of arrival and belonging.

The public realm is designed to encourage movement and connection throughout the precinct, with pedestrian pathways, landscaped interfaces and green links helping to establish an accessible and walkable neighbourhood. The landscape works alongside the architecture to create a clear hierarchy of public, communal and more intimate spaces.

The design also responds to Spotswood’s distinctive industrial character. Rather than separating the new development from its past, the landscape contributes to a contemporary interpretation of the site’s heritage, balancing robust urban materials with layered planting and generous green spaces.

As the precinct evolves, the landscape will continue to mature and strengthen its identity. The result is a considered public realm that supports everyday life – providing places for residents to meet, retreat, move and connect, while helping transform a former industrial site into a vibrant new community.
